What is Holy Week?
Holy Week celebrations in Jerez date back to the 16th century. At that time, the various associations performed their Route of Penitence divided into “brothers of light” and “brothers of blood”. The procession was led by the Brotherhood’s standard, and a priest carrying a cross marched at the back.
During the 17th century, the processions gradually acquired the characteristics that we see today. In the 18th century, this process reached its zenith and the brotherhoods took on all the splendid magnificence that we can still enjoy in modern times.
However, starting in the late 18th century, and continuing through most of the 19th century, the brotherhoods fell into decline. In 1771, King Carlos III of Spain abolished all confraternities. This decline was further attenuated by subsequent events, such as the arrival of the French, the “desamortizaciones' (a period when church property was seized and sold off), the First Republic, and so on.

Despite the Spanish Civil War, the 20th century was a fabulous period for Holy Week in Jerez. In the early 20th century, only nine confraternities held processions, increasing to eleven in the 1930's, and sixteen new brotherhoods were formed in Jerez during the 1940's and 50's.
Today, thirty-four confraternities hold processions along the Official Route, including sixty-two ceremonial platforms, as well as the procession of “El Resucitado” (The Resurrected) on the morning of Easter Sunday.
In the 1930’s, Jerez saw its first ceremonial carriages where the bearers were situated inside, and the statues of the Virgin Mary were first dressed in the now traditional large embroidered robes and carried under twelve-candle canopies.
The religious statues on display during Holy Week in Jerez have been made by famous artists of the past, such as José de Arce, Francisco Camacho and Esteve Bonet. Today, the statues are made by famous modern artists like Juan Luis Vassallo, Francisco Pinto, Ortega Bru and...Los Chaveli.
