A
Abono (Subscription)
Paid subscrption whereby the holder is assigned a seat along the offical route.
 
Acólito (Acolyte)
'Acólito' is a child who provides assistance in church or during the procession. The term is usually applied to those who wear a dalmatic and carry long, ornate candlesticks ahead of each ceremonial platform.
 
Advocación
A canonical title given to a religious image according to its representation in the Gospels or in the heart of the Catholic Church.
 
Ahuecador
A metal frame that supports and shapes the cape of the Sorrow Virgin Mary.
 
Altar de cultos
In order to chair the worship that the Rules of the Brotherhood prescribe, the image/statues are brought to the Main Altar. The images there, upraised and sorrounded by wax and few flowers make the 'altar de cultos'.
 
Altar de insignias
It's an artistic and nearly symmetrical exhibition of all possesions that belongs to a procession. In the centre, the Guiding Cross and on the sides, the lanterns, the ceremonial candlesticks, the poles, the trumpets and the wax candles. The insignia and standards are unique and of different shapes: Senatus, Simpecado and many others are placed carefully within the whole composition.
 
Andar (Walk)
'Andar' (literally 'to walk') refers to the harmonious movement of a canopied ceremonial platform as it is carried along in a procession.
 
Antifaz (mask)
Fabric made from the same material as the tunic that covers the headdress (made from a cardboard cone) and the face of the brothers.
 
Archicofradia
A main or 'head' confraternity of other more modern ones that have joined later on to the principal.
B
Bacalao (cod)
'Bacalao' refers to a flag that usually bears the brotherhood's emblem and covers the head of the members to their waist leaving their faces uncovered. The silouette and lenght resembles to a cod. In some confraternities it is also called Sine Labe. The standard of the brotherhood during the procession is folded as a sign of mourning. That peculiar folding resembles the shape of a cod.
 
Bambalina
'Bambalina' refers to the velvet or mesh drapings embroidered in gold or silk that hang from the top canopy and are located at the front, back and sides of a ceremonial platform. The 'purists' of the language prefers the word 'caida' (fall); bambalina belongs to the theatre jargon.
 
Banda (Band)
'Banda' is a band that accompanies the Confraternities ahead of the ceremonial platforms or ahead of the Guiding Cross. There are certain 'silent' Confraternities who prefer not to have musical accompaniment.
 
Bandera (Flag)
A square or oblong flag made from canvas, taffeta or other material attached to a pole and used as an insignia during the procession. Usually made of the same two colours as the tunic.
 
Besamanos (Hand-kissing)
'Besamanos' (literally, Hand-kissing) is an act of worship, traced back to medieval times, generally dedicated to the Virgin Mary, whereby a religious statue is offered to the faithful so that they may kiss her hands. The image of the Virgin Mary is usually standing on a staircase giving the impression that she has just come down from heaven. There are also images/statues of our Lord exhibited to 'besamanos'.
 
Besapies (Foot-kissing)
'Besapies' (literally, Foot-kissing) is a similar form of worship to that of 'Besamanos' (Hand-kissing), but dedicated to the Lord. On this occassion, the faithful kiss the feet of a statue of Christ.
 
Bocinas (Horns)
'Bocinas' (Horns) are symbolic insignia of ancient Roman trumpets. They are made of embossed, silver-gilt metal.
 
Bulla (Crowds)
'Bulla' (Crowds) is the name given to the mass of people who congregate in certain streets along which a Confraternity passes.
