With the exception of La Borriquilla, which takes the street in the morning of Palm Sunday, the majority of the brotherhoods of Jaén make their Station of Penitence early in the afternoon- although La Buena Muerte, La Vera Cruz, and Silencio come out almost at nightfall- and so it is advisable to dine early and get to the old quarter as early as possible. In this way, you can find a good spot from which to enjoy the departure of the image from its church. If you wish to enjoy the full splendour of the processions from the Carrera Oficial, in the surroundings of Bernabé Soriano and Plaza San Francisco, it will also be necessary to rise early. The few places that have rented seats – which are more than spoken for in this period- fill up early, and later it will be extremely complicated to find a more or less comfortable spot. The same will be true if you wish to contemplate the withdrawal of a procession, you have to be quick and get a place at least an hour before.
Streets closed to traffic
As we have seen, many of the processions take place in the city centre and its surroundings and, as a result, the streets are closed to traffic in order to let the full splendour of the brotherhoods unfold without problems. It is advisable to forget the car and use public transport. Walking is also a good option, Jaén being quite small, and the only inconvenience are the steep hills. The key is to leave early so as to have plenty of time to enjoy the events. Visit the churches In the days prior to the processions of the various brotherhoods, the title images of each of these are displayed in the churches from which they set off. Within a certain timetable, it is possible to contemplate the workmanship of the images and the beauty of the temples. The cathedral is one of the most visited places as it is here that you can see the venerated sculpture of Nuestro Padre Jesús “El Abuelo” (“The Grandfather”). Recommendations for those with children Amongst the tumult caused by the devotion of the locals, it can be a little complicated for children. It is therefore advisable, if you wish to enjoy the departures in the company of your children, to arrive well early and find a comfortable spot. If this is not possible, choose spacious areas and the high part of the Carrera Oficial so that the youngsters can also enjoy the beautiful sights. |
