What is the
What is Holy Week?
There is no doubt that Jaén lives its Holy Week intensely and, to show it, the city transforms itself during the Pasión, revealing scenes full of devotion, faith and beauty. After a period in the 1980s when the tradition suffered a slight relapse, there was a surprising recuperation. Nowadays, the celebration of The Passion of Christ is worthy of visiting, and offers a stunning spectacle for locals and foreigners alike.
The Holy Week in Jaén is based around fifteen brotherhoods that take part in sixteen penitential processions, drawing the devotion of the people of Jaén. Whether due to devotion – there is a great deal- or merely for the enjoyment of the aesthetic, each of the processions making up the calendar of the Pasión draw thousands of attendees. No one can resist the charm of the beautiful images, the art of the brotherhoods, and the sublime corners of the city. From Palm Sunday, the day most laden with processions (four brotherhoods come out onto the streets); to the tradition of brotherhoods like the Estudiantes, La Clemencia o la Buena Muerte; and delightful moments such as the “Madrugá” of Nuestro Padre Jesús, the city becomes an emotional sea of devotion and fervour that takes hold of the heart of all those participating, directly or indirectly, in the processions.

The Holy Week is adorned with the beauty of the places where the processions take place: San Ildefonso, the neighbourhood of La Malena, La Merced, the arch of San Lorenzo, la Plaza de Santa María, San Juan, San Bartolomé. These, and other, emblematic places are filled with a special colour during this period, making the Passion something special in the capital. The departures and withdrawals of the brotherhoods are especially stunning, and the Carrera Oficial is a breathtaking scene of solemnity, witnessed by the thousands that gather in the old quarter of the city.As we have said, Jaén transforms during the Holy Week. However, it is not only due to the devotion of the people, but also because of the enormous desire to take to the streets. This time is certainly one of the most dynamic and vital moments of Jaén. Witness the hustle and bustle of ancient streets alongside the devotion and faith coupled with the special manner of the locals, pleasant and friendly. This is how Jaén turns itself into an ideal location in which to spend the Holy Week.
