Méndez Núñez
Named after Admiral Casto Méndez Núñez, who rose to fame in the Battle of Callao (Lima) on 2 May 1866. The street was named after him on 12 August 1866.

Plaza de las Monjas
This square is named after the convent of Augustine nuns (monjas) known as Santa maría de Gracia, located in the square. It is the city's main square and was once the venue for bullfights, which were watched by the Count of Huelva from the rear of his palace. In the late 19th century, the square was redesigned and used for holding concerts by the Municipal band. It is now a popular meeting place for local residents.

Plus Ultra
The name of this street commemorates the transatlantic flight made by the Plus Ultra sea-plane from Palos to Buenos aires in 1926.

Gran Vía de Martín Alonso Pinzón
This avenue is the main thoroghfare in the city and has an old arched entranceway. It is named after a famous sailor who accompanied Columbus on his voyage to America.

Cardenal Cisneros
This street was named after Cardenal Cisneros in the 1940's. He was associated with the Catholic Monarchs.

Plaza Quintero Báez
This square was so-named in 1926, in memory of former city Mayor Quintero Báez, regarded as 'a model citizen for his intelligent and zealous management of the water supply'.

Palos de la Frontera
Originally known as Calle de los Palos due to the fact that 'palos' (posts/poles) used to be erected here to stop people who could bring contagious diseases from entering the city, especially during epidemics. In the 1940's, it was renamed Palos de la Frontera, a local town from where Columbus set out on his famous voyage.

Hernán Cortés
In 1887, this treet was named after the famous conquistador, Hernán Cortés.

Fernando El Católico
In order to mark the 400th anniversary of the Discovery of America, many streets were renamed, including this one in 1893, named after King Fernando the Catholic.

Plaza de San Pedro
Named after Saint Peter as it is next to the parish church of San Pedro (Saint Peter).

Gobernador Alonso
Named after Mariano Alonso y Castillo, a former Governor of Huelva, who saved the La Rábida monastery after the Disendowments of the 19th century. As a buyer could not be found, it was to be demolished, but was saved thanks to Governor Alonso.

Puerto
This is the popular name for the street due to the fact that it led to the port, connecting Plaza San Pedro and the castle of the Duke of Medina Sidonia.

Rábida
This street is named after the 15th century La Rábida monastery, regarded as symbolising the discovery of America.

Vázquez López
Named after Manuel Vázquez López, who was born in Huelva in 1831. It was so-named following his death in 1904. He was a representative to the court and senator of the kingdom, and also helped to set up the Port Works Committee (1874), of which he was the first president. He was also the founder and first president of the Chamber of Commerce (1886-1904), and founder of the School of Arts and Industry.

Rascón
This street has been so-named since the 16th century, but the origins behind the name are not known.

La Paz
This street was so-named (La Paz means The Peace) by Governor Alonso in 1852 in memory of battles fought in Northern provinces, although 'peace' actually arrived in 1876, at the end of the Carlist War.

Murillo
Named after Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, a painter from Seville (1617-1682). The street has been so-named since 1876, when it was laid to connect Calle Rábida and Calle Vázquez López.

José Nogales
Named after a well-known writer and journalist (Valverde del Camino, 1868 - Madrid, 1908).
