This square is named after the convent of Augustine nuns (monjas) known as Santa maría de Gracia, located in the square. It is the city's main square and was once the venue for bullfights, which were watched by the Count of Huelva from the rear of his palace. In the late 19th century, the square was redesigned and used for holding concerts by the Municipal band. It is now a popular meeting place for local residents.

Named after Manuel Vázquez López, who was born in Huelva in 1831. It was so-named following his death in 1904.
