The Guide to Holy Week in Andalusia

Holy Week Fraternities Bands Streets and heritage
Official route
What is the What is Holy Week?
Official route

Given that the processional routes of the gaditana (Cadiz) brotherhoods are not too long in the majority of cases, the Official Route through Cadiz represents a good part of the time spent by the confraternities on the street. The Official Route includes the following streets and squares: Plaza de Candelaria, Calle Montañés, Plaza del Palillero, Calle Novena and Calle Ancha. Calle Compañía is another street through which the brotherhoods all pass – excepting El Resucitado this year – although it is not technically classified as part of the Official Route.

Although it has undergone several modifications, the heart of the Route is considered to be the Plaza del Palillero; here you’ll find the official seating for the authorities. At various points on the route you’ll find those in charge keeping an eye on the schedule, checking that everyone arrives in the right place at the right time, avoiding delays or at least keeping them to a minimum.
In the last few years, the Consejo Local de Hermandades y Cofradías (Local Advisory of Brotherhoods and Confraternities) has begun to consider the possibility of varying the Route to incorporate other streets. They’ve also entertained the idea of reversing the present direction of the procession, so the Cathedral would be at the end of the route and not before, as happens in reality.
